This policy covers cookies and similar technologies (local storage, SDK identifiers) used on the StoryLoom website and web app. The iOS and Android apps don't use browser cookies, but Section 4 covers the closest equivalents there.
| Category | Currently | Purpose |
|---|---|---|
| Strictly necessary (always on — the Service doesn't work without these) | A session cookie | Keeps you signed in. Reading a story shared with you through a link requires a free account and this same cookie, the same as creating one |
| Functional (remembers preferences; not required) | None currently used | — |
| Analytics (helps us understand usage) | None currently used | — |
| Advertising (used for ads or cross-site tracking) | None currently used | — |
We don't currently use analytics or advertising cookies. If that changes — for example, if we add a product-analytics tool — we'll add it to this table under the relevant category, and ask for your consent where the law requires it, before it goes live, consistent with Section 6.
You can control or delete cookies through your browser's settings; most browsers let you block cookies entirely or clear them per-site. Blocking the strictly-necessary session cookie will sign you out, which will also prevent you from reading a story shared with you through a link, since that now requires being signed in. See the Privacy Policy, Section 7, for our "Do Not Track" disclosure and your other privacy choices. If you are in the EU, EEA, or UK: the law there does not require your consent for strictly-necessary cookies, which is the only kind we use, so we do not currently show a cookie banner. If we ever add a functional, analytics, or advertising cookie, we will ask for your consent before setting it and let you change your choice at any time.
The iOS and Android apps don't set browser cookies. They do use a device identifier (see Privacy Policy, Section 2(e)) for basic app functionality and, through Apple's and Google's own frameworks, crash and performance diagnostics. We do not currently track you across other companies' apps or websites for advertising purposes, and we do not use the advertising identifier on either platform. If that ever changes, we'll request permission first through Apple's App Tracking Transparency prompt (iOS) and the equivalent Android mechanism, rather than doing it silently.
Any third party listed in the Privacy Policy's provider table (Section 4) that receives data through a cookie or similar technology is covered there, by category, the same way. This policy doesn't duplicate that list — see the Privacy Policy for who we share information with and why.
Adding a new cookie category (for example, turning on analytics or advertising cookies) is a material change, and we'll update this page and the "Last updated" date, provide notice where required by law, and ask for your consent where required by law (for example, in the EU and UK), before that category goes live. Changing which specific tool we use within a category we already disclose — the same pattern as the Privacy Policy's vendor table — is not treated as a material change.
